2needlesandahook

Nicole

My name is Nicole and I run a small fiber arts business called 2needlesandahook in Roseneath. My first experience with fiber arts was at a young age when my mom taught me how to knit. In university I was taught how to crochet and I was excited to have another method of expressing my creativity through fibers. Macrame is my newest method of creating, and I have been working with this craft for a few years now. The macrame plant hangers I create are dear to my heart, as I am a true lover of plants. I have spent the last two years focusing a lot of time and energy on growing this business of mine. I have narrowed down my creations to a select line of plant hangers which are made with natural wooden rings and beads, as well as 100% recycled cotton cord.

Albion Hills

PINA

I am Pina of Albion Hills, which is a family-based cured and smoked meat company. Started by my father Sam in 1966, through his passionate for agriculture and the art of drying and curing meats, Albion Family Farms is truly a family business whose mission is to provide quality cured and smoked meats to local communities. Our specialty salami varieties are carefully crafted to ensure the highest quality and taste possible while practicing the ancient art of temperature and humidity throughout the room, by opening and shutting windows, Mediterranean sea salts and plenty of love and care. As we pass through another generation, we have not forgotten that our business is built one customer at a time, one product at a time. We can’t wait to share our family recipes with you!

Almarium Sours

ANNE & PAUL

We are Anne and Paul of Almarium Sours in Grafton. Our farm name is a nod of respect to the source of origin of all apples in Kazakhstan where “alma” means “apple”. Pomarium Renaissance is a unique single ingredient juice made on our farm. To grow heritage apple varieties, you need to clone them by grafting. So now we grow apple seedlings in our experimental orchard by planting seeds from tiny wild-sourced apples. As trees mature, we select those with the best wild-flavoured tiny fruits to graft and grow in our harvest orchard. We do not artificially manipulate flavour, pH or sugar. The result is a unique juice that has a sensational, complex flavour even without being fermented. It has so many different flavours—completely naturally—that it can also be unique to each taster. Why name it Pomarium Renaissance? “Renaissance” refers to tiny wild apples having been a part of the human diet since the days of Neanderthals. “Pomarium” is old Latin for “orchard”, a time when all fruits were called “apple”.

Artful Homespun

CHRISTA

I am Christa and I’ve been a finder for as long as I can remember. Artful Homespun is a true passion project for me, and is the culmination of all of the things that I love to do. I live for finding and creating one-of-a-kind items that add interest and a whole lot of personality to a space! I refer to myself as an intuitive artist, as my fine art pieces aren’t planned in the conventional sense, but are inspired in the moment. Recently my practice has shifted to become more environmentally aware by focussing on upcycling, repurposing and reusing items that may otherwise have ended up in landfills. Many of my upcycles also incorporate mineral and crystal pieces, as they make beautiful, natural additions to my work! I’m excited for this next phase of Artful Homespun and can’t wait to share it with Northumberland and beyond!

Betty’s Pies & Tarts

ALI

I am Ali, owner of Betty’s Pies & Tarts. Located near Port Hope Betty’s Pies & Tarts has been in business for more than 45 years. I have been the owner of Betty’s since 2016 but my connection to the business has spanned nearly 20 years! Starting as a high school student as an after-school job, moving on to university and teacher’s college, Betty’s has always had a special place in my heart. We still use all of the original recipes from years ago and love that we have been able to keep those traditions. Betty’s is famously known for our award-winning butter tarts. We have won numerous awards for our butter tarts, but most notably was The Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion in years 2014 and 2015. We also offer a variety of fruit pies which include flavours such as strawberry rhubarb, blueberry, raspberry, cherry and more.

JOE

I am Joe Pulla, owner of The Big Apple in Colborne, which is home to the biggest apple statue in the world. Built in 1988, Mr. Applehead is more than 12 metres tall and features a top observation deck with spectacular views. Our Apple Pies and Apple Bread are pretty famous, but we also make an awesome Pecan Pie and Mumble Crumble Bread. It’s not just pies and bread we make, either – our saucy apple dumplings, apple crisps, apple bread puddings and Apple Bites (croutons) are all regularly sought after!

Centre & Main Chocolate

ANGELA

I am Angela of internationally award-winning Centre & Main Chocolate in Warkworth. Years ago, when I was apprenticing as a chocolatier, I was mainly using a wide array of tropical fruits. After hours I’d do my personal shopping at the farmers’ market and pick up things like rhubarb, blackberries, peaches and fresh herbs. They were local, luscious and at the peak of ripeness. However, these local ingredients were not treated with the same reverence in the chocolatier’s bibles. I realized that there was nothing about tropical produce that was inherently better with chocolate than produce that grows here, so when I created Centre & Main Chocolate, this became my primary focus. My efforts to create a “taste of place” through my recipes is a new way to experiment with chocolate, one that celebrates the foods grown in our own Northumberland County fields, foraged in our forests and made by local food producers.

Cheeky Bee

PERRY & AMANDA

Cheeky Bee is the brainchild of myself, Perry; and my partner in life and love, Amanda. We started out as candle lovers and evolved into beeswax candlemakers. Established in 1999, Cheeky Bee grew out of the search for a natural alternative to chemically based toxic candles. After learning about the benefits and purity of beeswax, we started making candles that would inspire and amaze… “Can it be true? Do beeswax candles really burn completely clean? Cost less than paraffin candles? Is the flame really different?” Yes, yes, and yes! Painstakingly handcrafted in Warkworth we still stubbornly use the timeless methods of handmaking each candle. Just as our chandler ancestors did these past 4000 years, each candle is hand poured, hand dripped, hand dipped and hand finished. We are proud of all that is lovingly created in our humble little ‘factory’.

Cold Creek Coffee Roasters

Diane

I am Diane the owner of Cold Creek Coffee Roasters is a small, family-run business in Castleton. Cold Creek came to be in 2019 when the opportunity arose to buy a roaster from my niece. Me and my daughter Katie, and daughter-in-law Jennie, jumped at the chance to become coffee connoisseurs and entrepreneurs. We buy ethically sourced, high quality green beans from around the world and carefully roast small batches to bring out the flavours and aromas unique to each region. Many of our beans are purchased through Café Femenino, a coffee program that boasts an ethical sourcing model committed to ending the cycle of poverty affecting women coffee farmers. Apart from ethically sourcing beans, Cold Creek packages all of our coffees in omnidegradable packaging that seals in freshness for months.

CHEF ZAB

I am Zab from Craft. Having owned a few establishments, including Cravingz and Daizies over the years, I established The Craft Food House in December 2016. I am known for my healthy style of cooking and the flavors of my cooking have been recognized as a trade mark in the community.

Cramahe Hill Marmalade

SAMANTHA

I am Samantha of Cramahe Hill Marmalade. In 2019 I made my first batch of marmalade. I asked my UK-born Dad to be my marmalade taste-tester since he was a connoisseur. Every few days I tried new recipes and produced a batch of marmalade for Dad to sample. At the end of the month he picked his favourite (not surprisingly his sister’s recipe). We entered his choice into our tiny town fair in Warkworth and it won first prize. Buoyed by my win, I entered the 2020 World’s Original Marmalade Awards at Dalemain Mansion in Cumbria UK. I am still not sure how it happened, but I won two silver and four bronze medals – six medals for six entries. And so began my obsession with marmalade. It is my great pleasure to combine traditional marmalade methods with local and exciting flavours.

Dooher’s Bakery

COREY

I am Corey of Dooher’s Bakery, a fourth generation bakery in Campbellford. My grandfather Harry Dooher and grandmother Muriel started Dooher’s in Madoc in 1949 with just two little wood-burning ovens. They moved it to Campbellford in 1956 and the Bakery has remained here ever since. All three of my children work at the Bakery and my son Jeremy is one of the main bakers. For over 70 years, we at Dooher’s have been creating and refining recipes for mouth-watering breads, muffins, cookies, pastries, donuts, pies, tarts, cakes, squares, bagels and SO much more! Our time honoured, traditional goodness just keeps getting better and better. We are proud to have been named the Sweetest Bakery in Canada for 2018 and 2019 and we know the support of our local community is key to our success.

Douglas Morlock Blacksmith

DOUGLAS

I’m Douglas and I’ve been working with metal since 2001. From the beginning, working metal has been my life’s pursuit. Originally, I was going to be a goldsmith. But there is a strength and a vitality to forged iron that no other medium can match. The work is much slower, more deliberate, and infinitely richer. My first shop was a canvas wall tent, with few tools beyond hammer, anvil, forge, and leg vise. Today, my shop in Warkworth has all the room I need. I forge what inspires me, limited only by time. Whether a Gothic railing or an Art-Deco room divider; Baroque ornament in black iron or space-age simplicity in stainless steel – anything can be expressed in the language of metal.

Dreamer’s Café

ROGER

I am Roger of Dreamer’s Café, with a distinct vibe of Paris in Port Hope. When I started my business nearly 20 years ago, it was just that, a “dream”. Because I’m a dreamer I believe that the day you stop dreaming is the day you stop living! Once Dreamer’s was established, I created a cookie that is now well known and loved by many from across Canada. At one-point Loblaws wanted to buy the recipe but it would mean that I would longer be able create the cookie. That offer was turned down flat. Now with almost 1 million cookies sold I am hoping to sell my cookies all over Northumberland County and beyond. Northumberland County is very important to me and I regularly participate in raising food for the local foodbank, toy drives, and raising money for local businesses.

Driftwood Society

EYDIE

I am Eydie of Driftwood Society. Collecting small pieces of driftwood to decorate my home as a child transitioned into creating small totems and figures and quickly morphed into taking larger driftwood pieces to sculpt starburst mirrors (inspired by the show ‘Grace and Frankie’ where I saw a mirror on the set which I was confident I could perfect). The inspiration for the driftwood mandalas came to me after a diagnosis with chronic myeloid leukemia. Collecting and creating became my therapy. Each piece becomes a meditative work of art for myself and those who are inspired to own them. My current workshop is in my home in Port Hope where most of the driftwood is collected along the east and west beaches.

Edelweisee Studio + Stationery

JORDAN

I am Jordan the Owner and Creative Director at Edelweiss Studio + Stationery, a bespoke stationery and design studio located in Cobourg. Edelweiss offers clients a range of products and services from custom and semi-custom wedding invitation suites, event stationery and signage, branding and graphic design, as well as greeting cards and paper goods.

Empire Cheese

The first Empire Cheese Factory was built in the late 1870s on the farm of John Haig who was the first cheesemaker. Our current cheese maker is Mark Erwin. Empire Cheese is owned by local dairy farmers who hold an election each year to vote in a Board of Directors to run the factory. The Empire Cheese Co-op is the only cheese manufacturing plant operating in Northumberland County and the first one east of Toronto! At Empire, our cheese is made in the traditional way in open-style vats which in our opinion gives the cheese and curd a better flavour. We use no additives to boost production and there are no flavours added to our Cheddar. It is all natural, with no preservatives added. We are now HACCP registered, the top of the heap in food quality standards!

Essential Knots

MELISSA

I’m Melissa – the face behind Essential Knots. I started creating macrame a few years ago when I had wanted to decorate my house and I could not find any around here locally. I took a class out of town and was instantly hooked. I ordered my rope the next day! I am a lover of essential oils and that’s where my name came from. At times I will incorporate beads so customers can add oils and get a 2-in-1. Aromatic and visual pleasures from my work. I try to create in a manner that I would like in my home and hope that people appreciate my style. Classic retro vibes are totally me!

Forgar Creations

KAREN

My name is Karen and I am a self-taught jewellery maker in Cobourg. I started Forgar Creations to explore my passion for crafting and jewellery making. I primarily work with copper wire, semi-precious stones, and different types of crystals. When I started working with copper wire I found a whole new world. The shapes that I could make and this expanded into what I call my garden art. I take great pride in these pieces as, like most of my jewellery, they are one of a kind. I feel that it gives more of a personal touch. I always strive to have people wowed by the art that I create and am always looking for new inspiration and new challenges as I further my crafting and jeweling potential.

Furby settled in Port Hope in 1826 and was a partner in the town’s first newspaper in 1831. He is known as “the father of local journalism.” A bust of Furby remains in the store, on loan from the Port Hope library. Ganaraska Glow

MICHELLE

I’m Michelle from Ganaraska Glow. I began in the basement of my Port Hope home over 10 years ago as a way to help support my young family while creating and providing clean, affordable natural household products to my community. My journey into natural health began when my youngest daughter was diagnosed with Autism. I began studying holistic health and nutrition and developing my own line of products. I was astonished to learn how toxic the products we so readily use in our homes and on our bodies are. As my children grew and went off to school, I began my career as a Holistic Nutritionist. Last year I was able to realize my dream of opening my own little shop full of healthful, beautiful things. Ganaraska Glow is a Natural Health Boutique with a focus on DIY and all things natural.

Garlic Sun in Warkworth

LORI

I am Lori from Garlic Sun in Warkworth – an organic, handcrafted, small batch made sauce, dressing, dip & marinade. Made from 100% organic ingredients, Garlic Sun is dairy free, gluten free, soy free, sugar free, egg free and nut free and is also vegan and keto friendly. Garlic Sun is creamy and succulent. Garlic Sun came to be after I wanted my daughters to have something delicious and healthy to accompany their raw vegetables and to eat greens. It worked! Garlic Sun was never intended to be a business, but friends and family started requesting to purchase jars and the business took on a life of its own as word of mouth travelled. My family has been in Northumberland County for three years after deciding we wanted a life closer to nature, and to live a slower and more intentional existence.

Happenstance

NICK & ERIN

Hi I am Nick of Happenstance Bakery which I co-own with my wife Erin. We are a scratch bakery in Port Hope which we opened in 2016 after moving from Toronto. The name Happenstance fits in with the fact that we did not expect to end up in Port Hope but we did, we love it, and we ended up opening a store here. We are known for our breads – especially our garlic cheddar sourdough, cinnamon buns and pretzels. We also roast coffee – 200 pound each week – and we only sell by half pound so that customers have a fresh supply on hand. We are trying to give people a taste of something different!

Happy Beet

MARIA

I am Maria and I’m the maker of happy beet upcycled reusable products. Shortly after moving to Cobourg in 2018 and with an interest in reducing our household waste, I began sewing my own cloth produce bags to use at the grocery store and farmers’ market with secondhand fabric. I immediately fell in love with being able to create something useful, sustainable and beautiful. My new interest quickly turned into a business!
I sew out of my home studio and keep my production as low waste as possible. All of my products are made with upcycled cotton fabric, giving textiles a new life. I love supporting local!

Haute Goat

DEBBIE & SHAIN

We are Debbie and Shain of Haute Goat. After selling our farm in Campbellford in 2015, we moved to Port Hope to be closer to family in Toronto and we brought our animals with us. We would tell people we had goats and invited them to come see them and from there – things went crazy in a good way! Haute Goat Farm is now a breathtaking 200-acre farm located just outside historic Port Hope where you can discover the magic of our Nigerian Dwarf Goats, Huacaya Alpacas, Exotic Chickens, Icelandic Horses, Apiary, Tornjak Livestock Guardian Dogs and our big, silly mule named “Lucy”. We produce handmade, small batch goat milk skin care products, soaps and lotions and delectable goat milk artisan edibles and goodies, such as caramels, chocolates and fudge.

Hooked By Helena

HELENA

Hooked By Helena is a mother and daughter team in Cobourg that love to knit and crochet. Helena (the mother) was taught how to knit by her Oma beginning at age 5. Visits to Oma always included yarn and a pair of needles to continue knitting a never-ending scarf. Crocheting was something taken up as a new hobby about 6 years ago and Helena has been hooked since. Maria (the daughter) learned to knit at a young age as well and has pursued it on and off over the years. Hooked By Helena has been a member of the Cobourg Farmers Market for 3 years and has loved the community involvement. We are both happy to create new one of a kind items in colors and materials of your choice. We also make items that will cut down on single use items in your home.

Monster Taxidermy

STEF

I am Stef of Monster Taxidermy. I was a ceramic artist in the early 1990s when I made my way to Northumberland County. I bring my wonderful world of whimsical characters to life beginning with freehand drawings and doodles using water colour pencils, paints and markers. I turn my “flattie” characters to “3D” when I turn my doodles into felt creations, giving them even bigger personalities. You can find me in my studio in Cobourg sipping my favourite coffee, with my Weimaraner dog and hubby of 15 years by my side!

Collectively, we decided to bring our award-winning skills together to create a line of apparel – Jeff+Luke – that celebrates the town that most deserves celebration. Hooray for Port Hope!

Kawartha Dairy

For over 80 years, Kawartha Dairy has been proud to be a 100% Canadian-owned company, still operated by the same family that started it back in the beginning. Although it has grown tremendously from its early days, it remains headquartered in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, where it was founded. In 1937 Jack and Ila Crowe took a leap of faith and bought a small dairy in Bobcaygeon. Jack had learned the trade while working for Oshawa Dairy but the newly renamed Kawartha Dairy didn’t bear much resemblance to that larger big city firm. Now situated in a bountiful farming region, the dairy receives deliveries of fresh milk daily, most of which is from the local area and all of which is from Ontario farms. The members of the Crowe family would like to take the opportunity to thank both their loyal customers and the farmers who supply them.

Keto’s Bits and Bites

DARLENE

I’m Darlene from Brighton and a fun loving mom of 5 (yes 5!) I grew up with my mom baking & cooking from scratch. When she passed away I continued to bake especially around the holidays for my family as we really enjoyed it.

In 2017 I started a little side baking business which turned out to be a great success & super busy! Fast forward to February 2018 when I got a message on my baking page asking about Keto products. I took up the challenge and things took off from there and now my business Keto Bits and Bites features over 50 products! Keto gives our family extra energy, clear mind & just an overall better feeling. No more being bloated & sugar crashes. I have become passionate about this way of life & enjoy educating and helping others!

Knoxvilla Farm

ANNA

Hi I’m Anna, a 3rd-year university student. This year, I applied for the Ontario Summer Company Grant with the idea of expanding my usual vegetable garden to start Knoxvilla Farm, north of Port Hope. My mission is to produce food that is nostalgically delicious, nutritious, sustainable and lovingly grown. Alongside the summer veggies, I also make artisanal granola, gently roasted and stirred by hand to achieve that perfect golden crunch. Thanks for your support and I hope you enjoy!

Kokopelli Apiaries and Mushrooms

JOHN

I am John of Kokopelli – a small local, home based apiary located outside of Baltimore. All of our honey is “raw” meaning never pasteurized and rich with all the natural benefits provided by the vast array of our local pollen and nectars. We typically offer White, Gold and Dark honey along with delicious honeycomb. As each year brings with it an abundance of natural forage from which the ‘girls’ (did you know that all the foraging honeybees are female?) harvest the nectar to make the honey. The first honey of the season is our White. Around the end of July we enter into a more varied supply of nectars. You will see this reflected in the change in both color and taste of the honey, now becoming darker – our Gold honey. For those who seek a dark honey we offer a buckwheat honey.

Lake Reflections Apiary

WHITNEY

I am beekeeper Whitney from Cobourg! An interest in the natural world, particularly the relationships that exist between all living things drew me to beekeeping. Working with these amazing creatures has given me a deeper understanding and appreciation for the complexities of nature. In 2014, I founded the Trent Apiary Club, bringing the first hives to the Trent University Peterborough campus. Then together with Lesley Boileau I formed a swarm removal business called the Swarm Sisters. As a hobby beekeeper I understand the challenges and excitement in taking those first few steps towards having your own apiary. I am committed to working in partnership to share information and mentor new beekeepers. I strongly believe in a world where we can form communities and co-exist with all things on this land.

Laulaubird

LAURA

I am Laura, a maker living in Port Hope. In April 2020, I switched the majority of my business from felt toys to reusable cotton masks and accessories and haven’t looked back. In 5 months I made and distributed over 1200 masks while donating a portion of proceeds to the Northumberland Fare Share Foodbank. My masks are made with quality 100% cotton and stretchy adjustable nylon ear loops. Each mask has a removable nose wire and comfort is prioritized while still making an attractive and fun product. I see masks as a feature of community involvement. We wear our masks for each other as much as ourselves. But that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. Masks are here to stay, so why not have fun with them?

Laver’s Farm Fresh Eggs

IAN & SARA

We are the Laver Family. That’s me, Ian, with my wife, Sara, and our children, Jacob, Amelia and Ethan. We are proud egg farmers in Warkworth, Ontario. In my family, passion for animals, farming and family has been passed down for multiple generations. Four in fact. The first laying hen flock was welcomed by my grandfather in 1947. Following my grandfather’s leadership, it was my parents’ turn to make their mark on the farm. More recently, in 2019 my parents passed the torch to my wife and me. Throughout the years, the farm has seen many changes, but providing a high level of care to our hens continues to be at the forefront of my family’s egg farming values. We love what we do and we are ‘egg-cited’ to pass on our enthusiasm for egg farming to our children, the fourth generation of egg farmers in our family.

Little Owl Lettering

SHANNON

I am Shannon of Little Owl Lettering in Cobourg. This is a side business for me at the moment and started out of a need to reignite my creative side, after a number of years of not creating or drawing. I had made handmade Christmas cards with my mom and sister for a few years and decided to take a brush lettering workshop with a local artist to incorporate something different, and I fell in love with the flow and slow process of creating letters and modern calligraphy. The majority of my work is greeting cards and custom projects, but I also offer calligraphy services for weddings such as seating charts, and floral illustrations (a passion of mine) as well.

LoonSong

HEATHER & PAUL

We are Heather and Paul of LoonSong in Grafton and we have been practicing high quality gardening and farming since 2003, growing nourishing foods and cultivating vibrant community connections in and for the region around us. We now have spent over 10 years growing oats, spelt, wheat, and rye using organic and biodynamic practices and milling the grains with care, into stone-ground flours and rolled oats. The flavor and freshness of our rolled oats are unique and delicious and will bring you back for more! In 2017 LoonSong migrated from Manitoulin Island to Northumberland County in southeastern Ontario. Our crops are all planted in the hills of Northumberland and Peterborough area, between Rice Lake and Lake Ontario. We are inspired by the growing community connections, people, landscape, and farmland we are finding in this region.

Maple Dale Cheese

First established in 1888 by a cooperative of local dairy farmers, Maple Dale was formerly known as the Zion Cheese Manufacturing Company and was located just off of Zion Road, within the small rural community of Thurlow, Ontario. Now Maple Dale is a family run business, located on Highway 37, just 10 minutes north of Belleville, Ontario. Our cheesemaker Wayne Lain is a fourth-generation artisan and continues to make cheese the way his father taught him, with no shortcuts. We handcraft 100% farm fresh Canadian milk, including from Northumberland County, into approximately 1 million kilograms of cheese a year, creating a variety of fresh, aged, flavoured and specialty cheddars.

Marché 59

Marché 59 is a rural, organic production bakery featuring fresh artisan baked goods (French inspired breads and pastries) and all local organic & heirloom products. What started as a small-town, organic grocery store and bakery became an artisan café and now bakery in the truly rustic setting of P & H Farms in Hope Township, Ontario. Marché 59 entails two organic bakeries – a vegan gluten-free and a traditional – for baked goods, sweet and savoury. Everything is hand-prepared from scratch in newly created premises. Our bakery uses only organic ingredients, some of which are produced at the farm. The creation of the vegan gluten-free bakery kitchen was one of the best changes Marché 59 ever made. Our Nanaimo bars – 12 plus flavours in total – have especially developed a very loyal following across the province!

Marr-Velous Smoked Fish

PAM

I am Pam the owner of Marr-Velous Smoked Fish in Port Hope. I create Smoked Fish with no additives. I am a post-production specialist for television, photography, and video but at night I go to work with the smokers. When I moved from Toronto and resettled in Northumberland, I missed decent smoked salmon. So, when you can’t find what you want, make what you want! My friends tasted my smoked fish and encouraged me to sell it. I clock about 25 hours a week tending my seven smokers – they need adjusting every 20 minutes. I continue to perfect my hot and cold smoking techniques. And I choose only the best product I can find; the wood – cherry, alder, maple – that is from a sustainable producer and the fish is from native farms that don’t use chemicals, drugs, or unsustainable feed.

Mrs. B’s Country Candy

LORIE

I am Lorie – owner of Mrs. B’s Country Candy located in Brighton, Ontario. Nestled among the apple orchards and maple sugar bushes, we know country living and country goodness – especially the kind Grandma used to make. My nickname, Mrs. B, was furnished by the children in the military housing neighbourhood in Gander, Newfoundland where I lived with my husband. I was always an avid baker and frequently had cookies to share with the neighbourhood children. Mrs. B’s Country Candy began as a home-based enterprise. I started by making brittles then added caramels and chocolates. Our products are different because they are made the old-fashioned way, hand-made on-site one batch at a time to ensure quality and freshness. We use no salt or preservatives. Only the finest available ingredients are used to make our candy. Combining these quality ingredients with our own mixing and cooking techniques produces richer, smoother, and creamier treats.

Old Mill Alpaca Farms

AMY

I am Amy. My alpaca journey began in 2010. My lifelong love for animals and my then 6-year-old son Franklin teaching me how to knit led me to alpacas and their “fibre of the Gods”. Our original “herd” consisted of 6 alpacas that were housed at another farm. Our herd is now over 80 strong and resides on a beautiful piece of property in Northumberland County complete with apple trees bursting with fruit and a flowing creek. We seek daily, new and innovative uses for the eco (and animal friendly) fibre, with awesome end-results. Working the farm is a team whose mutual respect and fondness for each other, projects a peaceful and genuine atmosphere. We pride ourselves on providing the best possible care and lifestyles for our animals. Their gentle nature and luxurious fleece make them a joy to work with every day.

Ontariogro

TROY

My name Troy and I am the owner of Ontariogro in Hastings – a local producer of nutritious, sustainable and delicious microgreens grown year round. Many people ask – What are Microgreens? They are nutritional powerhouses, they add flavor, texture and colour to your meals. Eat them on their own, or use as an addition to your meals, or smoothies. Microgreens are a great source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. The vast array of flavours available from this food source can help your kids find a vegetable they love (and actually eat). And if you’re someone who prefers meat and potatoes you can still reap the benefits of vegetables while being able to enjoy more of what you love!

On 2nd thought Recycling

CAROLYN

I am Carolyn – the force behind On 2nd thought Recycling in Port Hope. When you grow up on a farm, you go to 4H and learn many unforgettable skills, among them sewing. After retiring from a three-decade career in human resources last year, my old sewing machine was dusted off and became my partner in fulfilling a new life purpose to fight the climate emergency by helping to keep fabric out of landfills. How? First, by rescuing thrifted clothes, linens and textiles from the waste stream. Then, by remaking, deconstructing and combining those items to create unique ladies’ fashion. Each unique piece carries with it the story of a previous life, ready for its next chapter with you!

Our Lucky Starts Café & Roasters

ELIZABETH

Hi I am Elizabeth of Our Lucky Starts Café & Roasters in Warkworth. After many years living in downtown Toronto with a career path that went from being a Registered Nurse to an internationally published design journalist and then as a producer on several home and garden television shows, my partner I and I Trevor packed in the urban life and headed for the hills – The Northumberland Hills! Within 6 months I opened Our Lucky Stars Cafe & Roastery. Since 2013, along with our two daughter and niece, we’ve been roasting fair trade organic coffee in small batches as well as preparing home-made, from-scratch, all-natural treats and lunches, with many gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options. Pete’s Fresh Eats

PETER

Hey there! I am Peter and I’m the owner of Pete’s Fresh Eats. I am an enthusiastic and passionate plant-based cook and my goal is to provide healthy, tasty and innovative meals that anyone can enjoy. I have been cooking since 2006, starting in Toronto, and after experiencing a variety of styles it became my passion. I got into plant-based cooking after changing my diet for my own health reasons and for my fiancé. With limited options from restaurants, I needed to provide a strict diet of no gluten or soy, make it fully plant-based and keep it delicious! As our health improved over a short time, it was clear this was for us, and this was where the idea to share my recipes was born.

P & H Farms

The 200-acre P & H Farms is located on the high plains just northeast of the beautiful town of Port Hope. More than two-thirds of the land is arable; woodland forms its natural eastern perimeter. Over its years of use for nursery and green cropping, the land was drained and carved into a dozen 10-acre or so fields, enclosed by cedar hedges or bush. Each plot is ideally isolated and can be easily monitored for specific plant culturing, pollination, and disease control. Over the last five years one large plot has become a hazelnut grove of about 1000 trees, another plot is a new fruit orchard. Two years ago, one field was dedicated to lavender planting. In addition to the permanent orchard, nut grove, and lavender fields, the land nurtures as well seasonal vegetables and herb gardens, and acres of organic animal forage and grain.

Parkwood Plank Company

JESS

My name is Jess, and I am the owner of, and creator behind Parkwood Plank Company a small, home-based business in beautiful Port Hope. We create quality, handmade wooden signs and home décor that contain affirmative quotes and expressions. Our family moved to Port Hope in 2014. We bought an older home in need of updating. Through renovations I realized that I had very specific ideas of how I wanted our home to be. I began experimenting with some DIY projects, where I discovered sign-making. In November 2017, I decided to offer custom decor with the simple goal of earning extra Christmas money for our family. As I continued to create custom pieces beyond the holidays, Parkwood Plank was born. I am passionate about helping people improve their overall sense of well-being by providing them with uplifting messages and positivity in the form of art!

Popham Lane Farm

PRICILLA & JOE

We are Priscilla and Joe. Our black currant farm is located along the shores of Lake Ontario southwest of Brighton. We have planted a total of 13,800 bushes, over an 11-acre expanse. This makes us Ontario’s largest black currant producer. We are very proud of the products that we make, which include our Premium Black Currant Sauce & Drink Mix as well as our Premium Black Currant Spread. Being that we are both of British descent, we are quite familiar with the black currants and their great nutritional value and health benefits. In Europe, black currants are a staple and here in Canada they are very rare to find. Many of our European customers say they have not tasted anything so good since they left the old country. This is why we planted our black currants and wish to “spread the love” of healthy eating.

Red Cloud Creations

JESSICA

My name is Jessica – creator behind Red Cloud Creations, a local home-based business out of Warkworth creating handmade decor and apparel. Red Cloud Creations started out as a fun side project for family and friends. With the support and encouragement of family, I was able to open up my own business in December of 2019. I named my business after the road I live on. Being community-oriented and having lived in Warkworth my whole life, I felt the name represented my business well. The best part of owning a business is the joy I get when I see the excitement on my customers faces. It is truly a creative outlet that lets me do something I love. When I have some time to myself and am not busy creating you will most likely find me enjoying the outdoors or trying out new recipes and cooking for friends and family.

Within the last decade I have had the opportunity to recreate some iconic designs for Toronto’s top photographers (just check my Instagram!) as well as work with brands like Elie Saab, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrerra and the Much Music Video Awards.
Seeing ideas come to life through the wonderful blend of the art behind the creative process and the often technical challenges that garment making poses has brought me an unparalleled joy that I hope to extend to all of my clients. Just Request it!

Rocia Naturals

JAQUI & SUE

Rocia Naturals in Brighton is the creation of Jaqui and Sue. It all started in 2008, when after using an eye makeup remover to peel off pesky glue residue from a sticker, we laughed and asked ourselves – if eye makeup remover could easily remove harsh chemical glue, what was it doing to us? In search of answers, we began a two-year journey. Aligning ourselves with top professionals in the industry, we “unlearned” many of the standards of conventional health and beauty and discovered just what it meant to be a truly clean and natural-based company. Through persistence and hard work we created our own line of affordable, premium, all-natural beauty products that could safely be used by anyone. We are dedicated to manufacturing top-quality affordable beauty products using all-natural ingredients that are ethically sourced and cruelty-free.

Sammie Mac Creative

SAMMIE

I am Sammie and I have been making unicorn and mermaid dolls for about 9 months now and I love it! It started with my daughter’s love for everything Unicorn. I found a pattern that I couldn’t resist and started sewing! From there I created mini unicorns and branched out into mermaids as well. I’m slowly building a following and hoping to try some new patterns soon.
The first doll from every pattern belongs to my daughter ❤

Saucy Dotty’s Gourmet Sauce

DOT

I am Dot – the founder of Saucy Dotty’s Gourmet Sauce in Brighton. Saucy Dotty’s Original Gourmet Sauce is the end result of a decision to put age restrictions, other peoples’ opinions, and other such nonsense aside and give an idea a chance. The process was three years in the making and during my first production, I was battling colon cancer which I am proud to say I beat. I opened my business location at the age of 80 – that’s right – 80 years young. Bold, exciting and indeed saucy! My sauce itself is at least that bold, with a balanced partnership of sweet and savoury and can used as a straight-up sauce, a marinade, glaze, dip, pizza base, as well as an ingredient in chili and stew. It is a family recipe from the 1940s handed down to me by aunt. I always tell everyone – ‘Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something – never stop, and never give up!

Shades of Gray

Shades of Gray is a family owned business that was inspired by our daughters’ food allergies and need for a healthy diet. This led us to the discovery of the health benefits that rabbit meat gives, not only to humans but for our pets too. Growing up on a farm with parents owning a butcher shop; it was a natural decision for the farm to start raising and selling our rabbit to local businesses, thus our business grew. While veterinarians and scientists try to perfect the perfect recipe for our pet’s diet, we found it’s been right in front of us the entire time. Our goal is to spread more awareness of the health benefits of raw and dehydrated pet food products made of 100% meat, providing so many nutritional health benefits to our pets and giving them a healthy longer life as nature intended it to be.

It’s now been over 15 years since I started taking my celebrated cookies to local farmers’ markets and lit the spark that ignited The Shortbread Company. My daughter Rosie is honouring my success by helping the company grow further. Her strategy? Keep making delicious food and sharing it with others to bring them joy in a tiny, delicious form – the perfect shortbread cookie.

Soul Scrubs

KENDRA

My names Kendra and I’m the creator of Soul Scrubs in Cobourg. Soul scrubs came to me through having sensitive skin when it came to exfoliation. I wanted to be able to control what’s in a scrub and to make whatever alterations were necessary to work with my sensitivities. I started to share my scrubs with my family and friends when I was in college, and it turned out I wasn’t the only one loving these body scrubs!

Soups2Go

TERRY

I am Terry, the founder and owner of Soups2Go in Grafton. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, we always made large quantities of food. My mother always used to say that we cooked enough to feed an army! In 2019, I started Soups2Go, after I had been making soups for a while for my mother-in law. An entry into Incredible Edibles Festival in Campbellford changed everything with people responding so well to my soups! Using local ingredients is important to me. We always start with produce that’s available to us, that’s Northumberland County first. We vacuum seal in convenient single serve portions in BPA free, 100% recyclable film bag and frozen flat to take up very little space in your freezer.

Sprucewood Handmade
Cookie Co.

MARK

I am Mark, Chef and Founder of Sprucewood Handmade Cookie Co. in Cobourg. Following my innate culinary interest, I began to develop recipes for menu items served at various functions for my catering company. One of these items was a savoury, “cocktail” shortbread cookie – a twist on the traditional dessert variety. That was 31 years ago! Less is more – and my artisan, small-batch approach is evident in the flavour profile of my fine shortbread cookies. I bake with pure local ingredients. I have also developed recipes that are the perfect treat for the diabetic and aging population. During the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, my savoury, “Original Cheddar” shortbread became The Official Cookie of the Vancouver Olympics! In January 2014, my shortbread was featured in the Canadian Living Magazine as “Canada’s Best Shortbread”! I now make 16 varieties of all-natural shortbread cookies in 2 styles: savoury and sweet cookies.

Stephanie’s Pet Accessories

STEPHANIE

On December 8, 2018 I brought home a new little bundle! Holly, the Jack Russell Terrier. I have always had a soft spot for little dogs. There’s nothing like scooping up a little pup and carrying them around. I love dressing them up too! I’m always putting Holly in different outfits. I’ve always had a knack for sewing and creating so I thought to myself ‘What if I made bandanas?’ Once I tried out a few, I realized more people would probably enjoy these too. That’s when the idea of Stephanie’s Pet Accessories started floating around in my head. I now offer pet bandanas as well as dog coats and dog calming vest for dogs of all sizes. There’s a size for every breed and animal! I take pride in my craftsmanship and I hope my love for creating, and of course my pets, shows in my work.

Steven Tedford Knives

STEVEN

My name is Steven Tedford of Colborne. I always had an interest in knives – not in a macabre way but in a fundamental way. My father taught me a lot about steel but it was my mother that taught me about business. That has been the key to my success. I made my first knife at 18 and was very proud of it. At 27 I started Steven Tedford Knives. I got a grant to start off with and I never even considered once to pursue anything else. I am 45 now and have made and sold 2045 custom handmade knives. Each knife is its own story. All I can say about where I am now is that, dreams do come true. I still have a long way to go. My sights are set at 10,000 knives or until my hands give out!

Stirling Butter

Armed with the old-world know-how of a long line of family cheese makers, Stirling Creamery was established over 85 years ago. With one churn and two coal burning, steam-powered pasteurizers, the West Family began a proud legacy that lives on today. We make a variety of butters in our Butter Collection so that food lovers can experience a range of flavours that expresses both our craftsmanship and what exceptionally good butter can taste like. This is why, for the past thirty years, we have continued the Stirling tradition of barrel churning some of Canada’s finest butter in Stirling, Ontario using local, fresh sweet cream. No colourants or preservatives here; ours is all natural and artisanally crafted. The result: all-natural, creamy, fresh buttery flavour that’s good enough to call one of the world’s best.

Sunday’s Company

MELISSA

I am Melissa of Sunday’s Company in Warkworth. In 2013, my partner and I moved from our stressful lives in Toronto. About a year after my move, I was still commuting to Toronto in order to support us financially, and I yearned to find something that pulled at my heart strings. One day, while picking “weeds” in a meadow, my intuition made it very clear that I was meant to be among those plants. I began studying herbalism, and it was the skincare aspect in which I enveloped myself and from this, Sunday’s Company was born. Every aspect of these products is lovingly and intentionally handmade. I am the portal in getting the Earth’s gifts into your hands, so that you can tend to yourself, and be close with the plants – to feel how they become more than just an oil that you lay on your body.

Suntree Natural Foods Marketplace

In 1982, Suntree Natural Foods Marketplace opened as a bulk food store in downtown Port Hope and remains one of the oldest bulk food stores in Canada! In 2013, Karen was coming off her second maternity leave, during which time she made weekly, if not daily, trips to her then local natural food store. She was hooked. To her, there was nothing better than buying fresh, healthy foods while supporting a locally owned small business. Karen and Jules, along with their two young daughters, took a leap of faith and made the big decision to move from Toronto to Port Hope, to purchase their own natural food store. They poured their energy into updating Suntree and making it the community-focused destination it is today. Six years in, they are proud of their expanded product offerings, a modernized interior and exterior, a welcoming environment, and a kick-ass musical playlist.

Uncle Chester’s Flaming
Hot Pepper Sauce

MARK

My name is Mark and I am the creator of Uncle Chester’s Flaming Hot Pepper Sauce. I decided back in 2016 to take this family recipe and produce it commercially after failing to be satisfied at my options in the marketplace. It seemed that no one could produce a product with equal amounts of heat and flavour, able to compliment not overpower. There are three levels of heat, starting out hot and rising in intensity from there. The citrus base, fresh ingredients, the beautiful, aromatic and flavourful scotch bonnet peppers, combine to make ordinary dishes extraordinary dishes!! It is so versatile!! Use it as a condiment, mix for dips, add as an ingredient. Uncle Chester’s Flaming Hot Pepper Sauce is produced in Northumberland County in Colborne. We utilize fresh Northumberland onion and garlic in our sauce!! If heat and flavour are your thing, we have it covered!!

Victoria Rose Accessories

SYLVIA

I’m Sylvia, born and raised in Cobourg. In this new world we live in, my family has had a hard time with our new normal. I dreaded that we had to wear medical masks however I didn’t resist it. Instead, I thought why not dress up a mask? All of a sudden, I became very creative with fabrics and jewelry. Voila – Victoria Rose Accessories was born. My main focus was my children and to keep their hands off of their mask, not get misplaced, and how to make it fun for them to wear. I then turned the focus onto myself. I needed to accessorize my mask so that I could feel fancier. Now I am excited to go to the grocery store or to the pharmacy with a fashion statement! We have to wear them, so let’s step it up and do it in style!

We are Leslie and Peter of Walton Wood Farm. Our story is one of a couple falling in love, buying a farm and starting with making bath salts in the country kitchen. We had three goals the farm. Create a non-farming income to sustain themselves, create rural jobs, and to save our historic 1850s barns for future generations and to preserve our county’s agricultural history. Today Walton Farms offers over 80 unique, consciously crafted & thoughtfully packaged personal care products, many of which are named after our own life experiences. We are committed to making high-quality products made with sustainable ingredients. We are on a mission to help grow communities by bringing back jobs to our country, preserving history and breathing new life into rural communities. There is a rural Renaissance going on, and we are proud to say we’re part of it.

Whimsy & Wonder

SUSIE JULIA

Whimsy & Wonder is my artistic pseudonym. I am Susie Julia, a Toronto-born illustrator and graphic designer currently based in Port Hope. Born out of a love for all things joyful and whimsical, I illustrates the unexpected joy found in the everyday—whether a cat sitting on a windowsill, a bright camper van parked on the side of the road, or a row of succulent plants. I work as a graphic designer for a design agency by day, and complete my digital illustrations during her free time. My colourful illustrations aim to bring a smile on your face, and promote mindfulness in this chaotic and uncertain world.

Whistling Willow Designs

ERIN

I am Erin Founder/Owner of Whistling Willlow Designs. Imagine the tranquil sounds of the wind blowing through a willow tree just outside your bedroom window – it entrances you into your dream world and its familiarity brings you peace and calm. As a young child growing up, on the windy nights this is what I fell asleep to. With this fond childhood memory “Whistling Willow ” was named, this has carried with me all these years as and is the one memory I have brought to life. With over 40 years of traditions in floral design and 20 years of interior design along with that entrepreneurial spirit my business was created. Whistling Willow & The Willow Floral Boutique offers to our client’s creative and unique designs from the simplicity of flowers adding unquestionable beauty to your home. We pride ourselves in designing a “Step Beyond the Ordinary”.

William Street Beer Co.

Sean

I am Sean – Founder and President of The William Street Beer Co. which I first opened in 2014. We are a community-based brewery that brews high quality beer in small batches. The business of beer making for me started with a hobby gone wrong. I had been brewing beer for well over a decade and started out doing very small-scale brewing. As scale continued to expand I was able to introduce more people to what I was doing as a hobbyist. Eventually it just seemed like a logical progression to license and bring it into a commercial perspective. Driven to serve our community, we work feverishly to provide Cobourg and the surrounding area with innovative ales, brewed onsite in small batches, at great value. Our innovations tend to be process driven, in trying to utilize locally grown ingredients. Our intent is to utilize 100% Northumberland County grown hops for our product.

Willow Grove Farm

SUE

I am Sue from Willow Grove Farm in Port Hope. Ours is a 4th generation family farm. Jam making and canning have been a family tradition that I grew up with. I grow a variety of fruits and vegetables which I use to create value added products for sale and for my family. In all my jams, I use a number of different recipes as well as time honoured family creations. I began at the Port Hope Farmers Market upon answering an ad for vendors back in 2004. As an exhibitor in various fairs and exhibitions in surrounding areas, I have won many awards with my products including at The Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
